October 2025 Meeting

Denise Sherman from WSU’s Center for Management Development CMD was the speaker at out October Chapter meeting. She has an interesting background as a businesswoman, but in the late 60’s became involved at WSU with the CMD. She was very well versed in their curriculums for business, including Project Management and Conflict Resolution, and many more certificate programs they had available for Business subjects. They even have a more current program they do with Legos and she had short speakers from three of their programs to tell about them. She led a lively discussion about the work they continue to do, and is a very engaging and interesting speaker.

We appreciate Denise’s time and expertise, and we’re excited about the opportunities CMD offers to help safety and leadership professionals continue growing their skills.

Stanley Black and Decker Tour

A big “Thank You!” to Stanley Black and Decker, Hesston, KS, for hosting the Wichita ASSP Chapter for a tour of their plant.

A great turnout of chapter members and guests toured the plant where the Hustler mowers are produced. The tour was led by Cameron Cothran, Chapter president, and Taylor Redding (past president). Participants learned about the facility’s fabrication, welding, painting, assembly, and shipping processes and the ergonomic improvements that the plant has implemented to reduce injury rates substantially over the past 10 years. Additionally, the group discussed the efforts made at the site towards continuously improving the safety culture.
